Membership is open to all those bringing up children on their own whether they are separated, widowed, divorced, single or where the other parent is unable to take their share of responsibility with regard to the care of the children.
  • Aims: Encourage and support one parent families; facilitate the exchange of experience and knowledge between training and volunteering; organise social activities and holidays for one parent families; influence opinion and bring about positive changes in matters affecting one-parent families. At national level, Gingerbread is a service and a public voice for one-parent families. Branches nationwide run courses, hold information evenings and organise family fun days and short breaks in accordance with member's needs and energies. Gingerbread Services comprise: mediation; counselling; legal services; counsellor facilitated closed groups for newly separated; an information desk dealing with inquiries by telephone, fax, e-mail and personal contact.

GROW

GROW aims to help people develop personal maturity through mutual self help groups in a caring and sharing community. GROW uses a twelve step programme in working towards personal growth.

The objectives of Grow are as follows:

  • To provide adult education in its broadest sense and to serve the need of both prevention and rehabilitation.
  • To harness the talents and experience of ordinary people who have battled through to good mental health and who are now sharing and showing the way to fellow sufferers.
  • To offer something to everyone - many people who join are looking for friendship and support, particularly if they have been struggling along with their problems. Examples of such problems include phobias, anxiety, depression, panic attacks, loneliness, apathy about life, unsure of direction, stuck in a rut or plain fed-up with things.
  • To hold group meetings to allow people to share difficulties and fears with others.
  • To provide genuine friendship as friendship is the special key to mental health.
  • Grow groups have been set up to help anyone at risk of mental illness. The main GROW office is in Limerick as listed below and the places and times of meetings are also listed below. For any information in the HSE west region, contact the Limerick number.

  • How can we help? Shine provides a range of information, support, advocacy and other profesisonal services for both it's membership, the general public and other service providers. Information provision is a key activity of the orgniasation and we try to make sure that such information is accurate, appropriate and up to date. Shine provides a number of additional supports and services which include:
  • Support Groups: For people with self-experience of schizophrenia and related mental health difficulties - Shine's Phrenz Groups are mutual support and social groups which provide a safe place for people with schizophrenia and related illnesses to speak openly and in confidence about their feelings and about the ups and downs that they may be experiencing in their everyday lives. There is a strong emphasis in the support groups on a postive outlook and approach in dealing with schizophrenia. All Phrenz groups are facilitated.
  • For Relatives: Shine's Relatives Support Groups meet on a monthly basis and provide a confidentail place for family members and friends to meet and share their experiences. Practical information and support are the key facets of these groups.
  • Education Courses:Shine provides a range of support initiatives including one to one information sessions and education coursesThe Family Education Course is designed to help relatives of people with symptoms of schizophrenia and related mental health difficulties, to learn more about the illness and to manage the symptoms and dificulties encountered. The course concentrates on the needs of the relative and promotes self development, self help and coping skills. Finding YOUR way is a course for people with self experience of mental ill health and supports the development of a personal understanding of the issues for the individual. It also provides information and coping skills over a six week period.
  • General Information:Lucia Week: is a national awareness event of Shine. Different awareness raising events are planned regionally and nationally in the week leading up to July 26th. The campaign is named after James Joyce's daughter, Lucia, who was diagnosed with Schizophrenia in her early 20's
  • Biennial Conference: takes place every two years and addresses specific issues and themes relating to schizophrenia.
  • Information Evening/Seminars are held at various locations throughout the year. They aim to provide information on Schizophrenia and related issues.
  • Shine News: is a quarterly newsletter available to members of Schizophrenia Ireland. It keeps up to date with current debates on schizophrenia and related topics.

SpunOut.ie is developed and managed by the youth-led Community Creations charity, is endorsed by key youth, health and community bodies and receives funding from a range of sources in the public and private sectors. The website can be accessed via the internet and mobile phones, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, ensuring that young people always have access to information and support if and when they need it.
