HSE National Restraint Policy

The HSE policy on the use of physical restraints in designated residential care settings for older people has been developed by a multidisciplinary working group in collaboration with Nursing Homes Ireland. A national core steering group led by the Office of the Nursing and Midwifery Services Director and the Office of the Assistant National Director for Older People was established to lead on developing a 'Train the Trainer' education programme to support the roll out of the policy. This programme is delivered by the Centres of Nursing and Midwifery Education in each HSE Area. A copy of the policy is available for HSE staff on the HSE Intranet site. (Intranet accessible to HSE Employees only)

This education programme will be relevant to nominated staff in all HSE designated residential centres for older people and private nursing homes. To support the process, Regional leads have been nominated from the HSE's National Assistant Director for Older Peoples Office to link with the services and support the communication process.
